Honesty of Groups: Effects of Size and Gender Composition
IZA Discussion Paper 16954
In short
An online experiment with 1,677 participants in 477 groups who talk by video chat. Larger groups lie more, all-male groups lie most, and a single woman already makes a group more honest.
What we find
- Larger groups are more willing to lie.
- All-male groups lie most.
- A single woman in the group already makes it more honest.
- How a group behaves cannot be fully predicted from its members' individual honesty.
